Lumbar disc herniation remains a prevalent spinal condition in modern society, affecting office workers confined to desks for long hours, laborers lifting heavy loads repeatedly, and middle-aged or older adults experiencing age-related spinal degeneration. As the spine links the upper and lower body while supporting body weight, disc-related pain can significantly impair daily function.
This condition arises when an intervertebral disc between spinal vertebrae becomes damaged. Commonly referred to as a "slipped" or "ruptured" disc, it can cause more than just localized back pain. Symptoms may include radiating pain extending to the hips, legs, or toes, numbness, and, in severe cases, lower limb paralysis, highlighting the need for early intervention.
Persistent back pain should not be mistaken for simple muscle strain. Accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment are critical for effectively managing lumbar disc herniation.

Among non-surgical treatments, nerve block procedures have gained widespread use for lumbar disc herniation. This approach involves injecting anti-inflammatory medication directly around the pain-causing nerve to reduce inflammation and improve blood flow, thereby alleviating discomfort. The use of C-ARM fluoroscopy allows precise targeting of the affected nerve root, enhancing treatment efficacy and minimizing the risk of recurrence.
Nerve blocks are minimally invasive, requiring no incisions or general anesthesia, and typically take about five minutes to perform. As an outpatient procedure, it is well-suited for busy professionals and elderly patients. The key to its effectiveness lies in accurately identifying the involved nerve root to optimize outcomes.
Nerve blocks can serve as a first-line treatment before considering surgery. Following successful pain relief, patients can engage in physical therapy or exercise-based rehabilitation to restore function and prevent recurrence, enabling a comprehensive, multi-stage treatment strategy.
Lumbar disc herniation is no longer exclusive to older adults. If you experience severe back pain or leg numbness, do not dismiss it as mere fatigue. Prompt diagnostic evaluation and conservative treatments like nerve blocks offer the best chance to avoid surgery and return to normal life.
