PFA employs high-intensity electric fields to selectively target and ablate cardiac cell membranes, reducing the risk of collateral damage to adjacent structures such as the esophagus or nerves. This approach enhances safety and shortens recovery periods for patients.
Atrial fibrillation, a prevalent arrhythmia characterized by irregular and rapid heartbeats, heightens the risk of serious complications, including stroke and heart failure. The condition is increasingly common among individuals over 65, with a growing number of cases reported among those in their 50s.

Led by Professors Jin-Kyu Park and Jin-Sun Park at Hanyang University Hospital’s Arrhythmia Clinic, the team utilized the PFA system to treat several patients with atrial fibrillation, including individuals in their 60s and late 70s who had experienced recurrence after prior treatments. All patients were discharged within one to two days without complications.
Building on this achievement, Hanyang University Hospital’s cardiology department plans to advance personalized care and integrate innovative technologies to enhance patient-centered treatment for arrhythmias.
