PFA uses high-intensity electric fields to selectively ablate cardiac cells, significantly reducing the risk of injury structures such as the esophagus and phrenic nerves. This approach enhances safety and shortens recovery periods for patients.
Atrial fibrillation—a common arrhythmia marked by rapid and irregular heartbeats—increases the risk of serious complications such as stroke and heart failure. The condition is increasingly common among individuals over 65, with a growing number of cases reported among those in their 50s.

Under the leadership of Professors Jin-kyu Park and Jin-sun Park at the Arrhythmia Clinic, the team treated several atrial fibrillation patients using the PFA system. Among them were individuals in their 60s and late 70s who had experienced recurrence after prior procedures. All patients were discharged within one to two days post-procedure, with no reported complications.
Building on this achievement, Hanyang University Hospital’s cardiology department plans to advance personalized care and integrate innovative technologies to enhance patient-centered treatment for arrhythmias.
