Varicose veins, a condition caused by weakened venous valves leading to blood reflux, affect the veins in the legs. Over time, these veins dilate and thicken, causing not only cosmetic concerns but also symptoms such as pain and swelling. Beyond aesthetic issues, untreated varicose veins can lead to serious complications like skin ulcers or blood clots.
Treatment varies depending on the severity of symptoms and the extent of venous damage. In early stages, non-surgical approaches such as wearing compression stockings and adopting lifestyle changes are recommended. These methods effectively reduce venous pressure and improve blood circulation. However, for more advanced cases, invasive procedures or surgery may be necessary.
In recent years, minimally invasive techniques like laser therapy, radiofrequency ablation, and medical adhesive-based vein closure have gained popularity. These procedures seal off diseased veins, redirecting blood flow to healthy ones. Performed without skin incisions, they offer reduced pain and shorter recovery times. However, not all patients are suitable candidates, making precise diagnostic testing essential.
Traditional vein stripping surgery remains an option, particularly for severe cases. This procedure physically removes damaged veins and can be effective, though it involves longer recovery times and potential scarring. As a result, minimally invasive treatments are increasingly preferred.

Management is key in addressing varicose veins. Even after treatment, patients are advised to continue wearing compression stockings, avoid prolonged standing or sitting, and engage in regular exercise while maintaining a healthy weight to prevent recurrence. Symptom relief does not signal the end of care.
Early diagnosis and proactive treatment are critical. Even if varicose veins are not visibly prominent, symptoms like leg heaviness, pain, or itching warrant a venous ultrasound to assess the condition accurately. Treating varicose veins is far less burdensome than ignoring them.
