Teeth, once damaged, rarely regenerate naturally, making consistent care vital for preserving their function and integrity. With age, the risk of dental problems rises, often leading to periodontal disease, enamel erosion, or loss of natural teeth due to trauma or degeneration.

The loss of teeth hinders chewing, making eating difficult and potentially leading to digestive issues. For this reason, dental interventions to restore proper function are often essential.

In South Korea, adults aged 65 and older qualify for health insurance coverage for dental implants. Under this program, patients pay only 30% of the total cost, contributing to a steady increase in implant procedures each year.

Beginning in February 2025, coverage will expand to include zirconia crowns, valued for their durability and natural appearance. Insurance eligibility requires patients to be at least 65 years old, with coverage limited to two implants per lifetime, regardless of tooth type. The program excludes those with complete tooth loss, requiring at least one natural tooth. Additional procedures such as bone grafting or maxillary sinus elevation are not covered and require extra payment. Insurance applies only to standard prefabricated abutments, excluding custom or integrated designs.

Dental implants greatly improve chewing function, supporting better nutrition and overall health for older adults. Before treatment, comprehensive assessments—including checks of chronic illnesses, blood glucose levels, and blood pressure—are essential. In addition, 3D CT imaging is critical for accurate planning. From February 2025, insurance coverage will include zirconia crowns in addition to conventional porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns, offering patients more durable and aesthetic options.

Choosing a dental clinic requires careful consideration of practitioner expertise, access to advanced equipment, and strong post-treatment care systems. To maximize implant longevity, regular checkups and diligent maintenance are essential.
