[Hinews] SEOUL, South Korea — On August 27, Professor Seok Ho Kang of the Department of Urology at Korea University Anam Hospital made history by remotely training Professor Kenji Zennami of Nagoya University School of Medicine in Japan in advanced robotic surgery techniques for bladder cancer. Utilizing the cutting-edge Da Vinci 5 platform, the event marked the world’s first remote training session in robotic bladder cancer surgery, a milestone in global surgical education.

From Korea University Anam Hospital, Dr. Kang performed a robotic radical cystectomy with intracorporeal urinary diversion on a bladder cancer patient, streaming the procedure live to Nagoya University. Beyond mere observation, Dr. Kang provided real-time guidance and detailed explanations, conducting a highly sophisticated remote surgical training session.

“This was a meaningful opportunity to share the expertise and precision required for robotic bladder cancer surgery across borders,” Dr. Kang said. Professor Zennami expressed gratitude, noting that the session “greatly enhanced my practical understanding of the technique.”

Dr. Kang is a recognized pioneer in the field, having been the first in Asia to perform intracorporeal urinary diversion using robotic surgery. With the most extensive experience in robotic bladder cancer surgery in the region, he has contributed significantly to standardizing robotic surgery protocols in South Korea. Dr. Kang has also shared his expertise through live surgeries and lectures at international conferences across Asia and Europe.
Currently, Dr. Kang serves as the director of planning at Korea University Anam Hospital and president of the Korean Endourological and Robotic Society. This landmark remote training session is expected to further position the hospital as a global hub for robotic surgery education.
